Journal #1 Chapters 1-7 The novel begins with the birth, and circumstances attending his birth. We go by upon that the unborn infant and main character, Oliver Twist, is being born in a workhouse. Then, a man by the name of Mr. Bumble arrives and declares to Mrs.

Mann that Oliver is now too old to be residing in her establishment. Mr. Bumble takes Oliver away to return to the workhouse.
