Although, the overseer of this workhouse however, Mrs. Mann, is a very selfish woman, and ofttimes keeps the sum of m unrivaledy for herself, l eaving some of the orphans to go hungry, and sometimes even die. By Olivers ninth birthday, he is perplex forth as a very pale, scrawny, unfit child. We learn that the organisation that Mrs. Mann runs is terrible and unfit for children to be in. Then, a man by the name of Mr. Bumble arrives and declares to Mrs.

Mann that Oliver is now too old to be residing in her establishment. Mr. Bumble takes Oliver away to return to the workhouse.
